Graziers in the Burdekin region will be able to improve animal production, profitability and water quality all at the one time thanks to a new land management guide published online this week. According to Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister John McVeigh the production of the new guide was a result of excellent collaboration between industry and the government and had potential for wide application. The Granshaw Farming sugar cane family business based at Dalbeg in the Burdekin has recently embraced new technology that will optimise inputs and minimise water quality impacts, while boosting production and earnings. Their new acquisition is a GPS-based, fully automatic liquid fertiliser and herbicide shielded sprayer, funded with assistance from the Reef Rescue program. (Tuesday, 14/08/2012)

Queensland Agriculture News: Demonstration Farm gives Ingham cane growers a chance to test BMPs

After a year of trialling a new farming system, a father-son team in the Herbert region say that they and fellow growers are learning about the effects of the new system on productivity and run-off water quality. Orazio and Anthony Marino own and manage two cane farms totalling 220ha in the Lower Herbert catchment. They agreed to host a commercial scale demonstration site, funded and monitored by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).

For David and Adele O’Connor, the adoption of Grazing Best Management Practices (BMP) has become a way of life for their Springsure livestock operation. The young couple run a 1000-head breeding and fattening enterprise on a property that has been in Adele’s family for over 100 years and has expanded over time, with a total acreage of 16,000 ha today.
