In a nutshell: how to find the North Australian NRM information you want
Step 1: Use the menus at the top of the site to narrow down the search to display items in the region, topics or item type that you are interested in.
Every time you make a menu selection, you will be able to see the following information:
A results list will be generated below the menus showing all items found with your menu selections. A summary of the results appears in the black bar below the menu.
An accompanying map will display where these items are located
The menus in the other categories will change to show the number of items available in those categories that match your menu selection. For example if you selected a topic such as “Biosecurity”, then the menus in the Regions category would change to show only those regions that had items relating to Biosecurity – along with a number in brackets showing the number of Biosecurity items in that region.
In this way you can use the menus to get an overview of what’s available in a particular region, topic or item across the whole site.
You can also enter your own keyword in the box in the top right to search the site just like a regular menu selection. So if you enter the keywords “Cane Toad” it would display all the Regions, Topics and Item Type sub-menus that had items with the word “Cane Toad” in their summaries – along with the numbers of these items.
Step 2: Check out your results in the items list and the map for items of interest.
Each result has a summary and shows its region, reading ease and type. Searches with more than 60 results will be displayed on more than one page and one map – so check out all the pages of your results by clicking on the links above the map on the right.
Step 3: Use the map to confirm the location of your search results (optional).
For each page of results, the Google Maps insert displays the broad locations of those results. Individual results are shown by the Google Map blue teardrop icon, while multiple results are shown as glow-circles with the number of items in the middle – locations with less than ten items are blue circles, locations with more than ten items have yellow circles.
You can check out the results in a particular location by clicking on the map icon – a talk bubble will open and you can click on the “view content” link. For circles with more than one result, you can zoom in until they separate out as individual map icons – you will have to zoom in a fair way – and then click on the icons to see the results.
Step 4: Check out the details in the results list
When you see an item of interest in the results list, click on the heading. The item itself will then appear in a highlighted box. There may be links to websites and downloadable documents and other media you can follow. Once you have investigated an item, or downloaded material, you can close the box (click on the cross at top right) and look at other results in your list. Remember to look at the other pages that may be in your list by clicking on the links displayed on the map.
Step 5: Start new searches
Once you have checked out the results you can refine your search by clicking other menu selections, or start a new search by clicking the “Reset All” button – on the right below the menus.
You can narrow your selection by choosing from more than one of the menu categories.
