Biosecurity Queensland's state-wide program that is monitoring the spread of myrtle rust, a serious fungal disease of plants, has confirmed further significant detections in the ecologically sensitive Wet Tropics in North Queensland. (14 May, 2012)

An endangered cassowary ran out in front of a bus at Mission Beach last month and was killed. A cassowary in her early 30s was euthanized after being hit by a car on the same road this week. The drivers were understandably upset. The first cassowary was too badly damaged to identify. (July, 2012)

Farmers in the Wet Tropics region have been offered Reef Rescue grants to a combined value of almost $5 million, enabling more projects to be funded in the region this year than in any of the previous rounds of Reef Rescue Water Quality Incentive Grants. The $4,832,439 will go towards funding an impressive 271 farming projects aimed at upgrading farming practices to better manage soil, and pesticide and nutrient inputs, thereby improving the quality of water in nearby waterways.
