ABC Rural News: Bilbies pushing north and into cattle country

A population of bilbies has been discovered near the homestead at Nicholson Station on the Western Australian/Northern Territory border. The discovery is a couple of hundred kilometres north of the areas normally associated with the endangered marsupials. (Monday, 13/8/2012)

Digger's Rest Station, near Wyndham in the Kimberley, failed to sell any cattle last year after the suspension of the live export trade to Indonesia. The owners have since bought some Murray Grey cattle from the south of Western Australia, which they hope when crossed with Brahmans or Shorthorns will give them better access to the domestic market. Aboriginal Rangers for Reserve 31165 is a unique project located in the East Kimberley Region of Western Australia. The reserve covers 125,000 hectares and is bordered on two sides by Lake Argyle; a man-made lake constructed as part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme. The region contains eighteen nationally threatened and/or migratory species and a significant proportion of the Lake Argyle Ramsar listed wetland.
