Rangelands NRM is seeking expressions of interest from groups of pastoralists who would like to host a carbon farming demonstration site as part of its Carbon Awareness Program. Demonstration sites will be established over the life of the project, which runs from 2012-2016. (January, 2013)

Native Conifers Carbon Sink Project (NCCSP)

Opportunities under the Carbon Farming Initiative reforestation methodology: Umpila Land Trust/Cape York Institute
This feasibility study looked at the potential to establish reforestation projects under the Carbon Farming Initiative on the Umpila Land Trust area on eastern Cape York Peninsula. The report was prepared by GHD Pty Ltd for the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Population and Communities in April 2012.

Opportunites under the Carbon Farming Initiative reforestation methodology: Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation
This feasibility study looked at the potential to establish reforestation projects under the Carbon Farming Initiative on Aboriginal freehold land between Mossman and Cooktown in the wet tropics bioregion of Queensland. The report was prepared by GHD Pty Ltd for the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Population and Communities in March 2012.

The first savanna-burning project was approved early this month under the federal government’s Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI). It is estimated that the project could generate up to 20,000 Australian carbon credit units each year. In order to determine the precise number of credits, satellite imagery of the region is used by AusCover to determine fire area and intensity of fires. (November, 2012)

Management Project - Fish River Fire Project
The Clean Energy Regulator has approved a savanna burning regime at Fish River under the Carbon Farming Initiative.
The methodology reduces total greenhouse gas emissions from the property, benefiting the environment and potentially earning an income stream from carbon credits for Traditional Owners.
By using methods that draw on Indigenous pattern burning and science, the area of land that had been historically burnt each year by wildfires has been reduced from 69% to 3% of the property.
