ABC Rural News: Fishing jobs lost after sick fish found
Retail sales have fallen considerably and the Gladstone Seafood Company has been forced to lay off 90 workers since the discovery of sick fish in the Gladstone Harbour in September 2011.

ABC Rural News: Less illegal fishing in the Gulf of Carpentaria
<p>The number of illegal fishing vessels in Queensland's Gulf of Carpentaria has dropped, according to the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service. A spokesman for AQIS says a drop in shark fin prices in Indonesia and the removal of fuel subsidies may be responsible. Customs and Border Protection also report a decline in illegal fishing vessels intercepted Australia-wide, and attribute the fall to the Federal Government's enforcement efforts, as well as education programs in Indonesia.</p>

<p>The Marine WildWatch Hotline is designed to assist the Northern Territory Government to manage marine wildlife incidents in seas and rivers in a coordinated, effective and efficient manner. Members of the public are encouraged to contact the hotline if they sight a marine animal that is at risk, stranded or entangled.</p>

<p>SeaNet Northern Territory is a program run by OceanWatch Australia and hosted by the Northern Territory Seafood Council. The program involves SeaNet officers working with fishermen to improve their environmental performance. The program also undertakes community engagement work to promote the fishing industry within the wider community, particularly with regard to bycatch and sustainability issues.</p>

<p>The <em>Northern Australia Land and Water Science Review 2009</em> is a comprehensive review of Northern Australia land and water science. It was coordinated by CSIRO in collaboration with over 80 of Australia's leading scientists working on northern Australian land and water issues. The review aims to: identify the sustainable capacity of river systems and economic development opportunities; identify the potential impact of development; and recommend ways to manage water resources that cross jurisdictional boundaries.</p>
