ABC Rural News: Grazing allowed in Qld national parks

Drought and fire impacted property owners in Queensland will now be allowed to graze their cattle on some national parks and reserves. Five national parks and eight reserves will be opened up as part of the state government's hardship assistance package. (Wednesday, 15/05/2013)

FutureBeef News: Pastoral Management Tools Project seeks producers to field-test technology

The Precision Pastoral Management Tools Project is seeking three commercial cattle stations to be involved in a two-year trial of their new technology, the Precision Pastoral Management System. The Precision Pastoral Management System will combine multiple remote technologies to record and analyse the performance of cattle and pasture for individual stations. Submissions close on the 31st of May, 2013.

ABC Rural News: Northern cattle stations urged to test precision technology

Cattle producers across northern Australia are being invited to test the Precision Pastoral Management System on their stations. The automated technology, that enables producers to remotely monitor, muster and manage cattle herds, is being developed by the Co-operative Research Centre for Remote Economic Participation in Alice Springs. FutureBeef: Stocktake Plus - pasture management app for graziers

Stocktake Plus is a grazier decision support tool, which allows the user to monitor land condition, stock number and rainfall. It also has a forage budgeting tool to help calculate the right balance of stock to pasture available. Stocktake Plus also produces reports for all records kept, including long-term ‘benchmark’ carrying capacities for paddocks and properties. The app is available for free download from this site.

Animal behaviour experts believe that by reducing stress levels in livestock, the herd can be encouraged to try new feed types and can even be taught to eat weeds. Research from the CSIRO has also found a broader, more adventurous diet has benefits for the health and productivity of livestock. (Thursday, 02/05/2013)
