ABC Rural News: NT gold mine causes a fuss about a finch

Url:

A bird conservation group has attacked plans to clear land in the Northern Territory to make way for a gold mine which is a breeding habitat for an endangered bird. The owners of the Mount Todd gold mine, 45 kilometres north of Katherine, are planing to clear 117 hectares of a known breeding habitat of the Gouldian finch. (Tuesday, 16/10/2012)

Estimated greenhouse gas emissions from land clearing in the Daly River catchment, Northern Territory

Url:

Law, R, and Blanch, S, 2009. Estimated greenhouse gas emissions from land clearing in the Daly River catchment, Nothern Territory, Australia. Simulated emissions using the National Carbon Accounting System and imputed carbon pollution costs. Report prepared by WWF-Australia and the Environment Centre NT, Sydney 20pp. Pdf 2.00 MB.

This report acts as a proof-of-concept study for Northern Territory and Australian Governments to demonstrate the significant land clearing induced greenhouse gas emissions in the Daly River Catchment. The report maps estimated emissions from future clearing, as well as illustrating a simple method of both levying carbon pollution charges on land clearing and valuing the carbon storage services by landholders who don't clear.
