Townsville City Council Land Protection staff look after the prevention and management of declared and pest plants and animals in Townsville. This involves implementing the Townsville Local Government Area Pest Management Plan, establishing practices to prevent the introduction of new pests and strategies to eradicate existing pests in small numbers. It also includes taking measures to contain established pests in Townsville, liaising with landholders, and enforcing the Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002.

This plan, prepared by the Barron/Mitchell Tilapia Management Group facilitated by the Queensland Fisheries Service, was produced in response to community concern that Tilapia will move out of Tinaroo dam on the Barron River and infest the Mitchell River catchment.

The draft Water Allocation Plan for the Tindall Limestone Aquifer, Katherine, on the Department of Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts website, is the result of two years of extensive consultation and includes information on the limits on the availability of water assigned to each beneficial use, rules for managing licences, and water trading.
