A new project managed by Leave No Trace Australia has been established in the Pilbara to address issues associated with the impacts of recreation on the Pilbara coast. The aim of the project, funded by Rangelands NRM, is to address the increasing impact of visitors and new emerging communities participating in recreational activities along the region’s coastline. ECOS Article: Reef monitoring: tourists step up to the post

Victoria University researcher Dr Martin Fluker has just installed three ‘Fluker Posts’ on the Great Barrier Reef near Cairns to encourage tourists to participate in a monitoring project. The posts are placed at strategic sites and contain a small platform for a camera and instructions on where to point and shoot. (Monday, 21/01/2013)

Management Project - Gunyangara ecological and cultural heritage trail – Wildlife conservation expansion

Marngarr intends to continue building the Gunyangara Ecological and Cultural Heritage trail to build on the tourism potential for this area. It is important to the development of this trial that Marngarr focus’ on using the local Indigenous workforce to build the trail and aid developing multilingual interpretive signage to promote awareness of the native fauna in the area. The trail intends to aid understanding of the cultural value of the fauna and how the wildlife can be better protected from encroaching development.
