Modelling the rate and pattern of woody thickening in Australian savanna pastures

Url:
www.mssanz.org.au/MODSIM01/Vol%204/Ludwig.pdf
Modelling of woody thickening in the VRD indicates that thickening is rapid on red soils that are heavily grazed an unburnt, and can be reduced with regular burning and reducing stocking rates.

The Land Manager's Monitoring Guide by the Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management provides monitoring information to help land managers assess the sustainability of their management actions.

The Land Manager's Monitoring Guide by the Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Managment, provides monitoring information to help land managers assess the sustainability of their management actions.

Guides are available for the following indicators

 • Depth to groundwater
 • Ground cover
 • Native plant richness
 • Native vegetation area
 • Soil pH
 • Photopoints

Guides are also being developed for a range of other indicators

Monitoring standing dead wood for carbon accounting in tropical savanna

Url:
dx.doi.org/10.1071/BT04109
Fensham R.J. 2005. Australian Journal of Botany 53, 631-638. Standing dead wood is valuable for its carbon storage, so the contribution of the loss of dead wood in fires to carbon emissions need to be considered.

Dynamics of a savanna-forest mosaic in the Australian monsoon tropics inferred from stand structures and historical aerial photography

Url:
dx.doi.org/10.1071/BT04141
Banfai & Bowman 2005. Australian Journal of Botany 53, 185-194. In Litchfield National Park, rainforests expanded into savanna where fires were infrequent or of low intensity, and were replaced by savanna where fires were frequent or intense.
